Enclosures

Enclosures are the elements that are used to mark boundaries and provide a degree of protection to private areas. In some historic forms of building  (for instance, the Georgian urban house) the enclosure was intended to provide real security and stop the hoi polloi from entering the private realm. Today, mostly, but not always, enclosures are symbolic, rather than functionally secure. Thus a low wall or hedge can do the job as well as an open railing of iron or steel or a wooden paling fence. There are, however, subtleties about the appearance and functionality of various forms of enclosure which are best dealt with separately for each type of enclosure .
