Functionality

The idea of functionality is often linked with purpose. We expect the things we make to do something for us. Thus, a front garden may be a parking lot, a retreat or simply the way to get to the front door of the house.  All of these things are functions and need to be thought about when we plan or reconsider a front garden.

It could be argued that one of the functions of a front garden is enjoyment, but we have included this aspect within the pride, expression, celebration category.

The functions of a front garden do not all need to be strongly expressed. Some are better played down or hidden. Some utilities, such as waste bins, usually not very attractive. We should consider functionality and appearance together.
